Special Counsel David Weiss is reportedly intensifying his focus on investigating Hunter Biden for potential tax violations in California. Subpoenas have been issued, with recipients including James Biden, the brother of President Joe Biden, and a former associate of Hunter Biden. The investigation, initiated five years ago, remains ongoing, and recent developments involve a Los Angeles grand jury.
The exact nature of the probe remains unclear, with uncertainty about whether investigators are looking beyond tax matters, such as potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). During a July hearing regarding a proposed plea deal for Hunter Biden, Weiss mentioned the possibility of charging him for tax and FARA violations. The plea deal, which would have allowed Hunter Biden to plead guilty to not paying taxes on over $1.5 million in income in 2017 and 2018, offering probation rather than jail time, did not materialize. Subsequently, Hunter Biden faced indictment on three gun violations.
Allegations of interference by the Justice Department have surfaced, with IRS whistleblowers claiming that Weiss was twice prevented from pursuing more substantial charges against Hunter Biden in separate jurisdictions. These claims suggest a potential impact of political influence on the investigation. In June, the New York Times reported that the Justice Department hindered Weiss from bringing charges in Washington, D.C., and California.
Lawmakers have sought answers from Weiss, who reportedly refused to address various questions during a closed-door session on Capitol Hill in October. Among the topics discussed was an incident involving U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada of California, who expressed reluctance to collaborate with Weiss on investigating Hunter Biden in his district.
Republicans, including Rep. Darrell Issa, express skepticism, particularly regarding the proposed misdemeanor plea bargain with no jail time for Hunter Biden’s alleged felonies. Concerns have been raised about the lack of explanation for this plea deal, leading to questions about potential external influences on the investigation. As the investigation unfolds, these developments underscore the complex legal and political dimensions surrounding the case.
