On Tuesday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson had a nearly hour-long conversation with former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund, who discussed the security failures leading up to and during the Capitol Building riot on January 6, 2021. Carlson suggested that the security failures weren’t just a result of negligence on Sund’s part, but were a result of orders from his superiors.
Sund revealed that he had been ordered not to arm the National Guard, while the DC mayor and senior military leaders had been discussing the possibility of locking down the city out of concern for violence. According to Sund, he had applied for a permit to potentially have the National Guard on hand, but his request was denied.
Sund also pointed out that Nancy Pelosi’s office had refused to allow him to bring in the National Guard during the riot even though it was clear that the rioters were out of control.
Carlson then questioned why no one seemed to be doing anything to get to the bottom of the security failures. Sund implied that there may be political motivations at play in efforts to avoid an investigation.
Moreover, Carlson asked why Ray Epps, a well-known associate of the Tea Party movement who was recorded instigating the riot, still hasn’t been arrested.
Throughout the conversation, Carlson noted that Sund was prevented from doing his job for a variety of reasons and that it wasn’t appropriate to blame him for a failure of leadership from his superiors.
Ultimately, Carlson and Sund concluded that a full investigation into the security failures needs to occur in order to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. They argued that any attempt to whitewash what happened on January 6 would be a disservice to the public.
Sund acknowledged that some report may be subject to political influence but said he hopes that Congress will be ultimately be willing to listen to the facts of what happened and take the necessary measures to prevent such an event from occurring again.
